Dosing

In some cases you may need to manually dose your coffee. It could be you're adjusting the set dose on a on-demand grinder or testing a new blend out. Understanding the core principles are vital in getting all the right flavours out of the coffee your using.

The term "dosing" coffee refers to grinding the correct or required amount of coffee for your porter filter basket.

When you're dosing manually ensure the coffee is entering the basket in the centre. If you're using an on demand grinder you can smoothly move the handle to fill all the gaps. You want the basket to be full past the brim so you can level off before you tamp. If your basket has empty spots or is missing coffee in areas this will affect the final shot.

Fill the basket to the brim and then with a level swipe, (a great tool is a wooden stirrer) wipe away the exess coffee prior to tamping. There is no need to waste the excess coffee, If your grinder has a doser simply swipe the excess directly into the dosing chamber.
